Boston bound

Baldie heads for the finish

Well, it wasn’t ‘quite’ the race I should have run, but I hit my hard goal and that’s all that matters. I cut it a little too close for comfort, with the gnarly muscle cramping and all, but I did manage to get my Boston qualifier, with 1:07 to spare.

Based on my first half of 1:34, and the fact that I didn’t go out too fast, I should have been close to 3:10, if not under. However, intense calf cramps in the last four miles blew a solid 22 miles.

Truth is, I’m not going to Boston in 2008, but rather the next year. Via either another marathon improvement next year or a good half, I will also qualify for New York and then do them both in 2009. With a half iron race in June next year, I’m likely to put a fall marathon on the agenda and tuck a couple shorter running and multi-sport races here and there over the year as well. I’ve got to have time to train properly and have a real life outside of racing.

Ah well, now it’s onto allowing my Plantar Fascitis to heal, enjoying the holiday season and hanging with family and friends. I have to, because once January gets here, I’ll be getting back into Saturday group rides and afternoon swim coaching, run training with more mileage and speedwork, cycle commuting and a little weight training.
