Bad run routing choices in a big snow storm and a little hidden ice begat a hospital adventure on icy roads, a gnarly upper body injury, a week off work and at least three times that long off cycling and running.
Two days ago I lamented the fact I haven’t been good at sticking to my fall/winter base training plans, and ended up doing a hatchet job on Tuesday and Wednesday workouts. Maybe it was the guilt, but I did both a ride and run today, so I’m hoping I can build off that and back into winter base training.
Maybe it’s the unusual cold and snow. Maybe it’s the bugs and injury stuff that turned my fall marathon into a half. Maybe it’s the ongoing QL tightness. Maybe it’s the weird gastro issues I had in November. Or just maybe, I’m getting to that age. Why am I bailing on winter base training?
It’s been a number of years since I did the Victoria Marathon half or full, but I’ve often come over for other events or just for a long weekend getaway. It was nice to have a great weekend there with my better half and to do the same race, at the same time.
A reasonably brief race report, a solid training cycle, a beautiful sunny day, good pacing / fueling and all my goals for this race met. Truly a great day in every way.
