Pub fundraiser for pancreatic cancer

My wife is helping organize a fundraiser to assist a friend’s family in a time of need, next Tuesday, November 23rd.  Please read on for complete details and forward to anyone in the Vancouver area, who might be interested in attending or purchasing draw tickets.  If you are interested in either (you do not have to attend the pub night to win the cash or raffle prizes), either post a comment below and we will be in touch (your email address is required but never published), or send an email directly to me [ james AT wanless DOT info ].

The cause

The Strikers, a Burnaby 30 Something Women’s Soccer League team, is holding a fundraising event to support the Cheung family, with partial proceeds going to the Betty Ergas Fund for Pancreatic Cancer Research at the BC Cancer Foundation.

The family’s husband was in the process of applying for life insurance when he received a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.  Denied the life insurance, the Cheung family remained positive, hoping that he would buck the odds and survive one of the deadliest cancers there is. Two years later, the reality is that his three daughters, aged 11, 9 and 6, are very likely about to spend their last Christmas with their father. He is no longer responding to chemotherapy and only taking medication for pain management.

About pancreatic cancer

The pancreas is the tenth most common site of new cancers, but pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women, comprising 6% of all cancer-related deaths. Pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose in its early stages. At the time of diagnosis, 52% of all patients have distant disease and 26% have regional spread. The relative 1-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is only 24% and overall 5-year survival is 5%.
